Hungary proposes ending President Sulyok's term

The Hungarian government has submitted to Parliament a draft of the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law (Constitution) that would require Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok to step down.

Axar.az reports that Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar made the remarks in a video address broadcast by Hungarian television channels.

"With the adoption of this amendment, the term of the current President of the Republic will come to an end," he said.

Magyar argued that Sulyok could not remain in office because he had failed to fulfill his duties and had turned a blind eye to abuses committed by the previous government led by Viktor Orban.

The proposal also includes a 12-year (or three-term) limit for members of Parliament, measures to strengthen the independence of the Constitutional Court, expanded judicial self-governance, stronger protection of public funds, and the abolition of the independent Parliamentary Guard.
