Sybiha warns Russia may try to derail US sanctions bill

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned that Russia may attempt to derail a proposed U.S. sanctions bill by portraying itself as interested in peace.

Axar.az reports that in a post on X, Sybiha said Moscow has repeatedly used what he described as "fake diplomacy" to delay tougher international measures.

"Over the past years, one pattern has been clear: every time major new sanctions loom—especially from the U.S.—Putin pulls out all the stops to buy time," he said.

"His weapon of choice? Fake diplomacy, staged phone calls, and bad-faith meetings," he added.

Referring to Senator Lindsey Graham's sanctions bill, which is expected to be considered next week, Sybiha urged lawmakers to remain vigilant.

"With Senator Graham's sanctions bill up next week, we must stay alert. Russia may try to derail it by pretending to care about peace," he noted.

Sybiha stressed that increasing pressure on Moscow is essential.

"Tightening the sanctions pressure on Moscow isn't just timely—it is vital to countering Russian terror and forcing a real end to this war," he added.

It should be noted that the proposed "hell sanctions" package originally called for the United States to impose secondary tariffs on countries purchasing Russian energy products. Those tariffs were initially set at 500%.

However, the bill was amended both before and after Graham's death. Under the revised version, the 500% rate has been reduced to 100%, and U.S. President Donald Trump would have the authority to independently impose or lift the sanctions if the legislation is enacted.
