Border stampede kills 2 in Spanish North Africa enclave

Two women were killed and four others injured on Monday in a stampede that occurred at the entrance of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave located on Morocco’s north coast, according to a local source.

The deadly stampede reportedly took place when the enclave’s entrance was reopened after three weeks of closure.

“Six injured women were rushed to nearby hospitals, where two of them later succumbed to their injuries,” said one local source, who spoke to Anadolu Agency anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media.

Thousands of Moroccans, many of them women, work transporting goods across the Morocco-Spain border at Ceuta, which is subject to occasional closure by the authorities.

In April, a woman was crushed to death in a similar stampede while attempting to cross the same border terminal.
