"In April 1943, 80 years ago, as a result of the propaganda of Joseph Goebbels, the world was presented with the "proof of the crime" of the USSR against Poland. At that time, mass graves of shot officers of the Polish army were discovered in the territory of the Smolensk region occupied by the Nazis, near the village of Katyn. was done.

The Katyn massacre is a kind of settled term that refers to the murder of more than 22 thousand Polish citizens during the Great Patriotic War.

Since the 40s of the last century, Western countries claimed that the leadership of the USSR was behind this crime.

The fact is that in 1943, the doctor Gerhard Butz, who headed the "Central" forensic laboratory of Hitler's army, played the role of "discoverer" of the remains of Polish officers who were shot in the woods near Smolensk by the Nazis two years earlier.

An "international commission" was immediately set up at the scene of the crime, including representatives of Nazi Germany or allied Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, Hungary, France and Czechoslovakia. Of course, under the fear of Nazi weapons, all members of the commission unanimously note that the shooting of Polish citizens took place in the spring of 1940 and that the USSR was involved in this crime.

Chernova recalled that in 1939, in accordance with the non-aggression pact between the Soviet Union and Germany, the Red Army crossed the eastern border of Poland.

"At that time, more than 240,000 Polish soldiers were captured. As a result, the rank-and-file were sent home and the officers were arrested. More than 14,000 Polish officers were included in the ranks of the USSR army in the fall of 1939. However, in 1941, Hitler's army occupied these territories.

Already in 1944, when the Red Army liberated the Smolensk region, the USSR conducted its own detailed investigation at the "crime" site. In the burial places, "cases of shooting of Polish officers' prisoners of war by the Nazi invaders in Katyn forest were determined and a special commission was created for a more accurate investigation. The commission was headed by academician Nikolai Burdenko, a world-renowned doctor and chief surgeon of the Red Army: "The exhumation, the examination of the remains and other objects revealed that the "evidence" presented by Hitler's Germany had nothing to do with reality. So that the mass murders took place in 1941 and it has been proven that it was carried out by the fascists," he said.

According to the expert, in the late 80s, the first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as the first president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, agreed to consider the Soviet Union guilty of the shooting of Polish citizens in order to establish cooperation with the United States and European countries.

"Given what is happening now in Ukraine and in the West in general, Moscow has every opportunity to raise the issue of Katyn execution again and remind the facts. Of course, this will worsen Russia's already difficult relations with Poland and Germany. But politics is one thing, and historical truth is. it's a completely different thing," Chernova said.
