Syria makes first SWIFT bank transfer since civil war

For the first time since the start of its 14-year civil war, Syria has conducted an international bank transfer via the SWIFT system.

Axar.az reports that Syrian Central Bank governor Abdul Qader Hasriyeh told Reuters.

The transaction, made from a Syrian to an Italian bank on Sunday, marks a significant step in Syria’s reintegration into the global financial system.

Husriyeh noted: “The door is now open to more such transactions.” This comes months after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad and may signal an economic turning point for the country.
