Merkel's Caucasus tour is filled with geopolitical issues.

Dr. Theodore Karasik, analyst on the Middle East and Senior Advisor at Gulf State Analytics, Washington DC told Axar.az while talking about tour of Angela Merkel to Caucasus:

"In Georgia the German Chancellor threw cold water on Tbilisi's timing on joining NATO which is seen as a gesture to Moscow.

In Armenia the German leader is visiting genocide monument and Museum which is certainly meant to send a message to Turkey. In Azerbaijan the discussion of course is on energy but also on Nagorno Karabakh.

The visit to Baku is strained because of other German politicians commentary on the crisis between Armenia and Azerbaijan so Merkel's task is to fix this aspect while focusing on the future of Azeri gas in Europe. German interest in the Caucuses is a long but quiet historical fact which is now being played out again".
