Azerbaijan has reached an agreement to extend the term of natural gas transportation from Iran to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

Axar.az reports that SOCAR was informed about this.

It was reported that since the current contract expires this year, a new agreement has been reached between the parties, and the document is currently being signed.

According to official information, Nakhchivan's annual gas demand is 260-300 million cubic meters. To address this need, Azerbaijan signed an agreement with Iran in 2005, based on a swap mechanism. According to the agreement, Iran transmits gas from Julfa to Nakhchivan, and in return receives the same volume of gas from Azerbaijan via Astara.

According to SOCAR, from January 1 to August 21, 2025, 188.5 million cubic meters of gas were transported from Iran to Nakhchivan. In general, gas supplies via this route have been started since 2006.

Regarding the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline, which was commissioned on March 5, SOCAR said that gas transportation through this pipeline has not yet begun. The daily transmission capacity of the pipeline is 2 million cubic meters.

The new pipeline will serve to diversify gas supplies for Nakhchivan and increase the reliability of the energy supply. Thus, the autonomous republic will be able to fully meet its growing energy demand by obtaining gas from both Iran and Turkiye.

The total length of the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline is 97.5 kilometers. 80 kilometers of this are located in Turkiye, and 17.5 kilometers are located in Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic).

The project is expected to transport 500 million cubic meters of gas annually, which will allow Nakhchivan to fully meet its total gas demand.
