Putin rejects ceasefire, fears Ukraine mobilization

Russian President Vladimir Putin, through Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, has outlined his reasons for rejecting a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.

Axar.az reports that according to the Kremlin, such a truce would allow Ukraine to reinforce its military with Western arms, rest frontline troops, and mobilize fresh forces. For these reasons, Moscow has dismissed the ceasefire proposal.

Political analyst Elxan Shahinoglu responded to the development, stating that Putin’s position is not surprising.

“Kyiv indeed plans to use the ceasefire to give its frontline fighters a necessary rest. As for increasing military capacity, Ukraine is doing that even as the war continues—it doesn’t need a ceasefire for that. Large-scale mobilization can also occur while fighting is ongoing,” Shahinoglu noted.

He added that Putin’s logic exposes his strategy of attrition: “Putin doesn’t want to give up his policy of exhausting Ukrainian forces through constant combat and capturing more territory. That’s why he’s rejecting the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents’ proposal for a prolonged ceasefire.”

However, Shahinoglu pointed to the contradiction in Putin’s stance. “The irony is that Russia itself needs a truce—Putin’s arguments apply just as much to his own army. Russian soldiers on the front line also need rest, as their commanders send them to face death daily,” he said.
