Safe and affordable housing is not just a shelter; it is also the foundation for protection, dignity, and opportunity.
Axar.az informs that this was told by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed during the women's roundtable titled "Adequate housing for gender equality and the empowerment of women," held within the framework of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13).
She stated that women globally are more vulnerable to violence due to a lack of land rights, unstable living conditions, exclusion from financial and credit opportunities, and a general lack of housing security.
Amina Mohammed noted that the psychological and emotional burden also occupies a significant place among the challenges women face. According to her, when safe housing is unavailable, inequality deepens, and women lose the opportunity to break free from cycles of violence and build a sustainable future.
During her speech, Amina Mohammed highlighted the importance of developing gender-inclusive housing policies and increasing women's access to financial and credit resources. She stated that civil society, particularly women's rights organizations and local communities, plays a key role in this process.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General added that closing data gaps related to women is also essential. According to her, a lack of statistical data prevents a full understanding of the actual situation of women across countries and communities, which ultimately hinders proper planning.
