IDP plight highlighted for new Westminster Parliament

Following the UK General Election, The European Azerbaijan Society (TEAS) has taken the opportunity of highlighting the plight of the estimated one million Azerbaijani internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees to the 650 members of the new British Parliament. The card was despatched to all MPs, both those who were returned by the electorate and the newly elected

The IDPs and refugees are the on-going victims of the Armenian–Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The card features 10-year-old Nazrin Khanlarova. She was born in the Gizilgum IDP camp, and her family originates from the town of Khojaly, This was the scene of the worst atrocity during the conflict, where Armenian forces slaughtered 613 civilians as they tried to escape on 26 February 1992.

Photographed in close-up in natural light against a back background by esteemed German photographer Philipp Rathmer for the TEAS Five Roads Back Home project, the image is stark and emotional. The card focuses on the single greatest desire of all Azerbaijani IDPs and refugees – to return home, even if they have never seen that region themselves.
