The upcoming UN climate conference - COP29 - should spur progress in two ways.

Axar.az reports that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said this in a video message.

The Secretary-General said that COP29 should first present new national climate action plans for countries by next year:

"Governments have agreed to align these plans with 1.5 degrees. That means they have to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions, and that has to be across the whole economy - driving progress across all sectors. Another issue is that climate finance at COP29 will be at the fore. Developing countries must step up their support to accelerate the transition to clean energy and combat global warming."

The Secretary-General added that COP29 must provide certainty to achieve needed funding, targets and climate finance: "The outcome of COP29 will also focus on reforms to reduce debt and make multilateral development banks bigger and bolder." should send concrete messages encouraging actions".
