A meeting of officials from the Caspian littoral states was held at the Azerbaijan national pavilion during the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, focusing on "Caspian Sea Water Decline in light of climate change."

Axar.az reports that the meeting was jointly organized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) and the Secretariat of the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea. Officials from Caspian littoral states, the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and representatives of other international organizations participated.

In her opening speech, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva highlighted the recent decreases in the Caspian Sea level due to climate change and emphasized the importance of regional cooperation to protect this unique ecosystem.

The deputy minister noted the importance of joint activities by experts from Caspian littoral countries to comprehensively study level changes and develop adaptation measures.

During the event, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen presented a report titled "Caspian Sea Level Fluctuations and Climate Change," which was prepared jointly by MENR and UNEP.

Representatives from the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund also participated in the discussions with their presentations on the topic.

At the end of the event, the "Declaration on Strengthening Cooperation Among Ministers and Senior Officials of Caspian Littoral States Regarding the Decline in the Caspian Sea Level" was adopted.
