UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of successful COP29 during his speech at the summit of G20 leaders in Rio de Janeiro.
Axar.az reports that in his speech, he said that the success of the COP29 held in Baku will play a decisive role in global climate measures:
"We need to succeed in Baku, build trust and encourage the preparation of highly ambitious national climate plans next year. Failure is not an option. Otherwise, ambitions in the preparation of new national climate action plans will decrease and we will get closer to irreversible climate changes," he said.
A. Guterres noted that the results of COP29 should create a solid foundation for the successful holding of COP30 in Brazil. He emphasized the importance of preferential public financial resources to meet the needs of developing countries.
The Secretary General said that the global climate crisis has reached a critical level.
"If we do not limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we will face catastrophic consequences."
He called on all countries to take more ambitious measures in the fight against climate change, reminding that the G20 countries are responsible for 80 percent of global emissions: "New national climate plans must contain specific emission reduction targets, cover all sectors and greenhouse gases."
In addition, the Secretary General announced that the UN, Brazil and UNESCO will launch a new project called "Global Initiative on the Accuracy of Information on Climate Change" in order to combat climate misinformation.
In the end, A. Guterres emphasized the importance of accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources, diversifying economies and ensuring a fair transition.
