Montella: We tried everything but couldn’t score

After Turkiye’s defeat to Australia, National Team head coach Vincenzo Montella made his first comments, stating that the match went largely as expected and that the team would improve in the next game.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, speaking after the Group D match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Montella told reporters that the team was aware of Australia’s tactical approach.

“The game did not go unexpectedly in tactical terms. We knew they would sit back and wait. They also used counterattacks. We conceded two goals, and we are very sorry,” he said.

Emphasizing the team’s fighting spirit, the Italian coach added that the players did not give up on the pitch.

“We showed team spirit on the pitch and played with heart. If we continue like this, we will start getting the results we want. We will do better in the next match.”

Montella also pointed to difficulties in finishing chances and a lack of match rhythm.

“In fact, without consistency, you cannot perform at your best in match rhythm. We tried everything, but we couldn’t score. If we had scored, it would have been very different.”

Following the defeat in their opening World Cup match, Turkiye now turns its attention to the second group game, where it will aim to stay in contention.
