Messi scores off bench as Argentina beat Jordan 3-1

Argentina wrapped up their World Cup Group J campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan on Saturday, as Lionel Messi came off the bench to score a trademark free-kick and set another tournament record.

Axar.az reports, citing The Guardian, Messi, introduced in the 60th minute after being rested with Argentina already assured of top spot, curled home his sixth goal of the tournament to become the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup appearances.

Giovani Lo Celso and Lautaro Martinez had given Argentina a two-goal lead before Mousa Al-Tamari pulled one back for Jordan.

"He could have played 90 minutes but... he wanted his teammates to have time on the pitch and save himself for what's coming up," Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said. "He said that's what he wanted to do and I was in agreement with him. That speaks volumes."

Argentina advance to the Round of 32, where they will face Cape Verde.
