Canada, South Africa open historic knockout stage

Canada and South Africa will make history on Sunday when they meet in Los Angeles in the opening Round of 32 match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the first men's World Cup knockout appearance for both nations.

Axar.az reports, citing Fox Sports, that co-host Canada advanced after finishing second in Group B, while South Africa secured a surprise runner-up finish in Group A with a 1-0 victory over South Korea.

Canada will be without injured midfielder Ismael Kone but could welcome back star defender Alphonso Davies, who is expected to make his tournament debut. South Africa, meanwhile, regains midfielder Teboho Mokoena from suspension as it seeks to continue its unexpected World Cup run.

The winner will advance to the Round of 16.

The match will kick off at 11:00 p.m. Baku time at Los Angeles Stadium.
