Martinez resigns after Portugal's World Cup exit

Roberto Martinez has stepped down as head coach of the Portugal national football team following the team's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Axar.az reports that Martinez announced his decision at a press conference after Portugal's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16.

"I came to Portugal to win the World Cup and I think that, without winning it, there's no point in continuing.

Yes, it's my last game for the national team. I'm very proud... I've felt welcomed as just another Portuguese person, in a very warm way. It's been a pleasure, a source of pride and a responsibility,” Martinez said.

The 52-year-old Spanish coach took charge of Portugal in January 2023 and led the team to the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League title.

Before joining Portugal, Martinez managed the Belgium national team from 2016 to 2022.
