Messi sets unwanted World Cup record with penalty miss

Argentina captain Lionel Messi missed his second consecutive penalty at the 2026 FIFA World Cup during his side's Round of 16 clash against Egypt.

Axar.az reports that the 39-year-old failed to convert from the spot in the 21st minute.

Messi had also seen a penalty saved in Argentina's 2-0 group-stage victory over Austria.

The miss saw Messi set an unwanted World Cup record. Excluding penalty shootouts, he became the first player to miss two penalties at a single FIFA World Cup.
