Messi sets new World Cup record

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has extended his record for the most combined goals and assists in FIFA World Cup history.

Axar.az reports, citing Teleqraf, that the 39-year-old forward provided two assists in Argentina's 2-1 semifinal victory over England at the 2026 World Cup.

Messi has now recorded 33 goal contributions in 33 World Cup appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing 12 assists.

His closest challenger is France forward Kylian Mbappe, who has registered 25 goal contributions at the World Cup, with 20 goals and five assists.

Argentina's victory over England set up a 2026 World Cup final against Spain.
