UEFA issues new handball guidance to referees

UEFA has issued new instructions to referees following several controversial incidents in the UEFA Champions League.

Axar.az reports that from now on, any handball by a defending player inside the penalty area must result in a penalty kick.

UEFA emphasized that this rule is not open to interpretation.

The decision was reportedly made after an incident during the 2025/26 season match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, when Marc Pubill handled the ball inside the penalty area but no penalty was awarded.

UEFA stated that in similar situations in the future, referees must award a penalty.
