Former Manchester City academy player Courtney Meppen-Walter has died at the age of 32, his former club Bury announced Tuesday.

Axar.az reports, citing the Daily Express, that Meppen-Walter most recently played for Bury, whom he joined in 2024. He also represented Carlisle United, Ashton United, Chorley, Stockport County, Telford United, Radcliffe, Guiseley, Nantwich Town and Stalybridge Celtic.

Meppen-Walter came through Manchester City’s academy and captained England’s Under-18 side. In 2013, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to causing the deaths of siblings Kulwant Singh and Ravel Kaur in a 2012 car crash.

The court heard that Meppen-Walter was driving at nearly twice the 30 mph speed limit when his Mercedes collided with a Nissan Micra in Manchester.

After his release, he began his senior career with Carlisle United before returning to non-league football.
