AFFA refuses to support proposed FIFA reforms

The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) has declined to support the position of UEFA and other European national associations on reforms to FIFA’s leadership.

Axar.az reports, citing Rеport, that 55 UEFA member national associations have reached a common position on reforming FIFA’s governance system. AFFA was the only association not to support the initiative.

The national associations said they had lost confidence in FIFA’s current leadership. UEFA believes that, alongside institutional changes, new leadership at FIFA is also necessary.

FIFA is currently headed by Gianni Infantino. He was elected FIFA president in 2016 and was subsequently re-elected twice unopposed. The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in Morocco in March 2027. Infantino has announced that he intends to run in the election.

Relations between UEFA and FIFA have also deteriorated following Infantino’s proposed “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, which envisaged transferring the commercial rights to major football tournaments to private investors. Although Infantino later abandoned the project, UEFA said confidence in FIFA’s leadership had not been restored.
