At the meeting, the French president brought up again the discussions on the future of the institutional structure of New Caledonia.

The French leader emphasized that "the state wants to continue to move forward, without using force, while expecting respect, towards the stabilization of New Caledonia's institutions."

On January 15, the French president appeared before the military at the Istres air base with red eyes. According to local media, Macron's appearance worried even the French themselves. The president tried to pass this situation off as a joke.
