Commercial ship traffic has resumed at Iran’s Astara port after being suspended for a long period due to sediment buildup.
Axar.az informs that this was reported by the “Azad Iran” Telegram channel.
Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and head of the Ports and Maritime Organization, Saeed Rasouli, stated that the first commercial ship from Azerbaijan has already docked at Astara port. The ship, carrying construction materials and with a cargo capacity of 1,600 tons, successfully arrived at the port.
According to the report, since last year, declining water levels in the Caspian Sea and sediment accumulation in the port’s entry channel have hindered vessel movement. As a result, dredging operations began in April, and so far, 150,000 cubic meters of sediment have been removed.
Rasouli emphasized that restoring operations at the port will enhance Iran’s trade and transport capacity in the Caspian Sea and contribute to the development of regional port infrastructure.
