Kazakhstan approves bill banning LGBT propaganda

Kazakhstan’s Senate has approved provisions banning the promotion of pedophilia and non-traditional sexual orientation in public spaces.

Axar.az informs, according to Kazakh media, the Senate said the law is aimed at protecting children from information that could harm their health and development. It introduces restrictions on distributing such content in public places, as well as through mass media, telecommunications networks, and online platforms.

Senator Sergey Yershov said amendments to the Law on the Rights of the Child establish a direct ban on promoting non-traditional sexual orientation, noting that the issue is widely debated in society.

Deputy Justice Minister Botagoz Zhakselkova stated that international law allows limits on freedom of expression. She cited Article 19(3) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which permits such restrictions when they are set by law and aimed at protecting national security, public order, morality, and public health.
