Takaichi's party poised for landslide victory, poll shows

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is on course for a decisive victory in the Feb. 8 Lower House election, according to a new Asahi Shimbun survey.

Axar.az reports, citing Asahi Shimbun newspaper, the poll shows the LDP is likely to win well above the 233 seats needed for a single-party majority, and together with coalition partner Nippon Ishin, could secure more than 300 seats — potentially even a two-thirds majority that would allow it to override the Upper House.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s strong personal popularity is a key factor, with her Cabinet approval rating at 57%, far exceeding disapproval. The opposition is struggling, with the Centrist Reform Alliance at risk of losing more than half its seats, while smaller parties such as Sanseito and Team Mirai are expected to make gains.

Analysts say the “Takaichi effect” has consolidated LDP support not only among its base but also among unaffiliated voters, positioning the party for a landslide.
