Hungary begins phased shutoff of gas exports to Kyiv

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Wednesday that Ukraine will not receive gas from Hungary until it resumes oil supplies.

Axar.az reports that Orban wrote on Facebook: "As long as Ukraine does not provide oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary."

He added that: " We will protect the energy security of Hungary, we will keep the protected petrol prices and the reduced gas prices!"

Hungary and Slovakia are the only European Union countries that still purchase Russian oil, and they are resisting the bloc's plans to end these imports next year while simultaneously seeking to diversify oil supply sources and routes, for example, through a pipeline from Croatia.

Supplies of Russian oil via the "Druzhba" pipeline, which passes through Ukraine, have been suspended since late January due to damage that Kyiv says requires time to repair. Hungary and Slovakia accuse Ukraine of delaying the resumption of supplies for political reasons. The EU has offered Ukraine technical support and financing to restore oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia via "Druzhba."
