Parliamentary elections have begun in Hungary.
Axar.az reports that polling stations will remain open until 19:00 local time.
A total of 199 seats are being contested in the elections: 93 will be allocated through party lists, while the remaining 106 will be distributed in single-member constituencies. The main contenders are the ruling coalition of the Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance and its smaller partner, the Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP), and the opposition Tisza Party. The leader of Fidesz is current Prime Minister Viktor Orban, while the Tisza Party is led by former government official and MEP Peter Magyar.
According to analysts, among other political forces, only the Our Homeland Movement, led by Laszlo Toroczkai, has a realistic chance of surpassing the 5% electoral threshold and gaining parliamentary representation.
In the previous parliamentary elections held in 2022, the Fidesz–KDNP coalition won 135 seats, securing a constitutional majority.
It is noted that Hungary does not have an election silence day, but on election day campaigning is prohibited within a 150-meter radius of polling stations, as well as political advertising in the media. However, previously placed campaign materials are allowed to remain.
Exit poll results may only be published after polling stations close.
