Turkcell, Google Cloud sign data center deal

Turkcell and Google Cloud have signed an agreement to establish Turkiye’s first hyperscale regional data center.

Axar.az reports, citing Bloomberg HT, that the planned facility will become one of Google Cloud’s 42 hyperscale data centers worldwide.

Under the agreement, Google will provide a range of services from Turkiye as a regional hub, including artificial intelligence, data storage, and cybersecurity solutions.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company had been working with Turkcell for two and a half years on the project. He added that the new cloud region in Turkiye would offer the same capabilities available in Google’s cloud regions in the United States, including accelerated computing power, high-performance storage, network infrastructure, and cybersecurity tools.

Turkcell CEO Ali Taha Koc described the project as a historic step for Turkiye, saying it would mark the first hyperscale data center established in the country.

Turkcell said its investment under the partnership is expected to reach $1 billion by the end of 2032, while the total economic value created by the project is projected at more than $5 billion annually.

The new Google Cloud region is expected to begin operations between 2028 and 2029 and will consist of three or more zones.

The project is also intended to strengthen Turkiye's digital ecosystem, support cloud adoption across industries, and enhance the country’s position as a regional innovation hub in digital technologies and artificial intelligence.
