Slovakia set to file lawsuit over ban on Russian gas

Slovakia is set to file a legal challenge in the coming days against the European Union’s decision banning imports of Russian gas.

Axar.az reports, citing Slovak media, Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the government will bring the case before the Court of Justice of the European Union, arguing that the regulation was adopted using a qualified majority vote in a case where unanimity should have been required.

According to Fico, this circumvents the sovereign right of EU member states to veto such decisions.

“We object to the fact that a qualified majority was used where it wasn’t applicable, and that the right of a sovereign EU member state to veto a decision was circumvented,” Fico said.

He added that the government is in the final stage of preparing the lawsuit and expects it to be filed by April 27, possibly earlier.

It should be noted that the ban on Russian gas imports, adopted under an EU regulation in January 2026 and planned to take full effect by the end of 2027, was passed by a large majority vote.

The decision faced opposition from Slovakia and Hungary, with Hungary already having filed a related legal challenge.
