The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
Axar.az reports, in a post on X, he stated that on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the discussions covered the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the IAEA’s ongoing work to support Ukraine in rebuilding its energy infrastructure, including new units at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant and repairs to the New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl.
“The IAEA remains committed to supporting nuclear safety and security in Ukraine,” Grossi said.
President Zelensky, in his statement, emphasized the “unacceptability of formalizing and legitimizing Russia’s presence at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.”
He said discussions included temporary shutdowns of nuclear reactor units, reductions in their output, and the potential consequences of such actions. Zelensky stressed that for safe operation, the plant must be returned to the control of Ukraine’s licensed operator and nuclear regulator.
“We agreed to continue IAEA missions to ensure continuous monitoring of the plant’s condition,” Zelensky said, adding that he was grateful to Grossi and the agency team for their visit on the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
