Trump says Iran deal is close; Tehran says nothing finalised

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said Thursday evening that a draft agreement between Iran and the United States is largely finalized, but contradictory positions taken by U.S. officials continue to complicate the negotiation process.

Axar.az reports that speaking on a television program, Baghaei said shifting positions by American officials were nothing new and that Iran had entered the diplomatic process in good faith and with a responsible approach.

He said the main challenge throughout the negotiations had been what he described as inconsistent U.S. policies. According to Baghaei, the United States and Israel repeatedly violated the ceasefire during the past two months and the U.S. recently carried out attacks on infrastructure facilities in southern Iran, including water reservoirs in Sirik.

“We see that while they speak of diplomacy and negotiations, they simultaneously resort to force and illegal actions,” he said.

Baghaei stated that most of the draft agreement had already been finalized, but the process was repeatedly disrupted because U.S. officials introduced new demands or changed their positions through both negotiators and public statements.

He stressed that Iran would not yield to pressure and would continue to defend what it considers its national interests.

Regarding the latest status of the talks, Baghaei said the diplomatic process had naturally been affected by recent U.S. actions. He noted that mediators remain active, with both Pakistan and Qatar continuing their efforts. He also confirmed that an adviser to Qatar’s foreign minister recently visited Iran for discussions.

According to Baghaei, the text of the agreement is nearly complete, but inconsistent U.S. positions have continued to create obstacles.

Responding to reports about a possible signing ceremony for an initial understanding between Iran and the United States, he said such reports remain media speculation. He added that any agreement must first be reviewed and approved by the relevant authorities in Iran before an official announcement is made.

Commenting on the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said the world had witnessed Iran’s efforts to ensure safe navigation in the waterway, but claimed recent U.S. actions had created unprecedented insecurity in the region.

US President Donald Trump claimed an agreement to end the war with Iran was close on Thursday, hours after cancelling a third consecutive night of strikes.

He told reporters it was "subject to finalisation of documents, which should get done, over the next few days" and that there would "probably" be a signing ceremony in Europe.
