The U.S. Navy is considering renaming an aircraft carrier currently under construction after President Donald Trump instead of Doris Miller, a Black sailor who was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Axar.az reports, citing NBC News, that the ship was previously named the USS Doris Miller in honor of Miller, who served as a mess attendant aboard the USS West Virginia during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Despite having no formal training on anti-aircraft guns, Miller operated one of the weapons during the attack and helped evacuate wounded sailors.
Miller became the first Black service member to receive the Navy Cross, the U.S. Navy's second-highest military decoration.
The USS Doris Miller would have been the first U.S. aircraft carrier named after a Black person and an enlisted sailor. The decision to name the carrier after Miller was made during Trump's first term.
According to two U.S. officials, discussions about changing the name have been ongoing for several months. Miller is also under consideration for the Medal of Honor, although the award has not been approved by the White House.
The authority to name Navy ships rests with the Secretary of the Navy, although defense secretaries are often involved in decisions concerning aircraft carriers.
The final decision would therefore involve Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao.
