Three ships collide near Alesund, Norway

Three large ships collided in Valderhaugfjorden near Alesund, Norway, early Sunday, leaving all three vessels damaged but causing no injuries.

Axar.az reports, citing NRK Broadcaster, that the vessels involved were the “Hav Frakt,” “Bergfjord” and “Xanthia.” Two are now docked in Alesund, while the third is anchored in the Fjord. “Bergfjord” suffered major damage to its bow.

Norwegian authorities said the cause of the collision remains unknown. Police are reviewing AIS tracking and technical data to reconstruct the vessels’ movements before the incident.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration’s rescue centre received a mayday call at 1:37 a.m. A major rescue operation was launched, involving a rescue helicopter, the frigate Fridtjof Nansen and emergency services. The crews remained aboard, and no evacuation was required.

Rescue officials said poor visibility and darkness had been reported in the area at the time of the collision. No environmental damage has been reported.

Police have questioned several people and carried out technical examinations. No one has been charged, while further investigations are continuing.
