At least 17 killed in airstrikes in Ethiopia’s Tigray region

At least 17 people were killed in overnight airstrikes in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, while federal forces and Tigrayan fighters exchanged artillery fire.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that the strikes killed nine people in Adwa, about 100 km northwest of Mekelle, and eight in Sheraro in northwestern Tigray.

The fighting comes after federal forces took control of Mekelle over the weekend, raising fears of a wider conflict. Ethiopian forces and fighters loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front also exchanged heavy artillery fire near the Tekeze River on Monday.

Ethiopia and Eritrea severed diplomatic ties last week amid mutual accusations, while regional tensions have raised concerns about a broader conflict.
