Turkiye, Iran discuss five-year extension of gas deal

Turkiye and Iran are discussing a five-year extension of their 25-year natural gas supply agreement, which expired on July 30 this year and provides for annual imports of around 10 billion cubic meters of gas.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that the process is expected to be completed soon, paving the way for natural gas supplies to resume through the pipeline entering Turkiye from Dogubayazit.

The agreement is automatically extended for another five years unless Turkiye and Iran announce their intention to terminate it some time before its expiration. This provision may already have taken effect, resulting in the automatic extension of the agreement.

The natural gas purchase and sale agreement between Iran and Turkiye was signed in Tehran on August 8, 1996.

The Eastern Anatolia Natural Gas Pipeline, built under the agreement, is approximately 1,491 kilometers long. It runs from Dogubayazit through Erzurum, Sivas and Kayseri to Ankara.
