Iraq demands total withdrawal of US military

The Fatah Alliance ('Conquest', in Arabic) expressed its rejection of the partial withdrawal of US troops from the country and demanded their total withdrawal.

Axar.az reports citing foreign media that Karim Alaiwi, from the Parliament's Security and Defense Committee, declared on behalf of the bloc that all national factions are demanding that all foreign military forces leave the country.

Alaiwi called 'unacceptable' the decision to reduce the number of troops and emphasized that the Pentagon must comply with the parliamentary resolution calling for their departure from Iraq, including the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.

'The calls for the total withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq will continue and even intensify because they enjoy political and popular support,' the legislator stressed.

The Acting Secretary of Defense of the United States, Christopher Miller, announced that some 2,500 soldiers will remain in Afghanistan and as many in Iraq.

Another member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Kata'a al-Rikabi, assured that the change in the US presidency will not influence what was agreed by Iraqi legislators.

In the words of the official, regardless of whether it is Donald Trump's current government, or Joe Biden's, about to take office, the US military must leave Iraq.
