President Donald Trump has reinstated his "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran, aiming to reduce its oil exports to zero to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Axar.az reports that ahead of meeting Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Trump signed a memorandum ordering strict economic sanctions and enforcement measures. He criticized President Biden for easing sanctions, which he claims enabled Iran to fund its nuclear program and militias.
Iran’s uranium enrichment has accelerated, though it denies pursuing nuclear weapons.
Trump's policy includes enforcing the 2024 Stop Harboring Iranian Petroleum (SHIP) law, targeting foreign ports and refineries handling Iranian oil. Despite U.S. efforts, China continues to buy Iranian oil, using systems that bypass U.S. sanctions. Trump also directed U.S. diplomats to push for a "snapback" of international sanctions under the 2015 nuclear deal, which the U.S. exited in 2018. Britain, France, and Germany may trigger these sanctions before the authority expires in October, though Iran calls such moves unlawful.
