If necessary, NATO allies could wipe Russia’s Kaliningrad region off the map in a very short time.
Axar.az reports that this was stated by General Christopher Donahue, Commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, in an interview with Defense News.
According to the general, the U.S. military and NATO allies are now beginning to implement a new strategic plan. The essence of this plan is to shift the alliance’s focus—from air and naval components—to ground forces, in response to potential Russian aggression.
Donahue noted that under this plan to counter the Russian threat, NATO allies are urgently working on standardized weapons systems and information-sharing mechanisms, taking into account the industrial and economic capacities of member states.
It is emphasized that NATO is also trying to learn from the Russia-Ukraine war experience, where the primary confrontations have been land-based. In many cases, the enemy’s naval and air capabilities have been neutralized primarily by ground systems rather than symmetric sea or air operations.
In this context, General Donahue mentioned the Kaliningrad region—a Russian exclave about 75 km wide, surrounded on all sides by NATO countries:
“We can now wipe that region off the face of the earth with ground-based systems at a speed and efficiency we’ve never achieved before. The plan is already in place,” he said.
