Italy's Eni announces significant gas discoveries in Libya

Italian energy company Eni reported two new gas discoveries in Libya from a recent exploration campaign.

Axar.az reports, citing Eni, that the discoveries located in the Bahr Essalam South 2 and Bahr Essalam South 3 structures were drilled approximately 85 km offshore and 16 km south of the Bahr Essalam gas field.

Gas was found in the Metlaoui Formation, the main productive reservoir in the area, with well tests confirming high-quality, productive capacity.

Preliminary estimates indicate that the two structures together hold more than 1 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Due to their proximity to the existing Bahr Essalam field, development is expected to be rapid, using tie-backs to existing offshore facilities. The gas will supply both the Libyan domestic market and for export to Italy.

Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains the leading international operator, producing roughly 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025, with three ongoing development projects, two of which are scheduled to start in 2026.
