U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said that proposals put forward by him and Jared Kushner could bring Ukraine and Russia together in the next three weeks, potentially paving the way for a summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and possibly a trilateral meeting including U.S. President Donald Trump.
Axar.az reports that U.S. Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff made these remarks during an interview with Fox News.
“Jared and I hope that within the next three weeks we will present some proposals that will bring the two sides together and may even lead to a summit between Zelensky and President Putin, and perhaps a trilateral meeting with the President,” Witkoff told Fox News. He added that Trump “doesn’t want to come to a meeting unless he feels that he can consummate this thing and get the best result.”
Witkoff described the ongoing war as “a silly war” over territory, noting that both sides “don’t seem like they really want to fight with one another.”
He emphasized that leadership-level obstacles have slowed a potential deal, and understanding Putin’s motivations has been key. “He’s never been anything other than straight with me… I needed to understand what his motivations were, his goals, and I actually think that a lot of those meetings now are becoming very relevant,” Witkoff said.
He expressed hope that progress would be seen soon: “Hopefully, you’ll be hearing some good news in the coming weeks.”
The remarks follow U.S.-brokered talks in Geneva on February 17–18, which sought to bring both sides closer to an agreement.
