Pope says peace in Ukraine 'cannot be postponed'

Pope Leo XIV called for an end to the four-year conflict in Ukraine, saying peace "cannot be postponed" during his Sunday address at St. Peter’s Square.

Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that he highlighted the human toll of the war, describing it as a “wound inflicted on the entire human family” that leaves death, destruction, and lasting suffering.

The appeal comes as the U.S. continues efforts to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv, though progress remains slow amid disputes over eastern Donbas territory.

The Pope emphasized that peace is an urgent necessity requiring both heartfelt commitment and responsible action.

"Peace cannot be postponed," the pope said. "It is an urgent necessity that must find space in hearts and be translated into responsible decisions."
