Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, met with Fuat Oktay, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye (GNAT), who is visiting Azerbaijan to attend the 10th trilateral meeting of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Azerbaijani, Turkish, and Georgian parliaments.
Axar.az, reports that the parties emphasized the importance of the trilateral meeting, noting that relations between Azerbaijan, Turkiye, and Georgia contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and economic development in the region.
The Speaker noted that the processes unfolding today both in the region and globally, as well as the existing challenges, stress the necessity of continuing joint work among the foreign relations committees of the three countries. This important event, implemented within the framework of trilateral parliamentary cooperation, serves to further elevate the level of interparliamentary relations between the countries.
During the meeting, they expressed views on Azerbaijan–Turkiye relations, stating that ties between the two countries are developing in accordance with National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s slogan, “One nation, two states.”
Sahiba Gafarova said that Azerbaijan and Turkiye demonstrate to the whole world that they stand together both in times of joy and in times of sorrow. She emphasized that the fraternal relations between the heads of state are the most important factor in the multifaceted development of bilateral ties. It is the heads of state who determine the agenda of bilateral cooperation and give relevant instructions regarding its development directions. All opportunities are utilized to fully reflect the will of the heads of state in advancing bilateral relations at the parliamentary level as well. There is also a high level of mutual support and joint activity within international parliamentary organizations.
Fuat Oktay noted that amid the tensions existing in the broader region, cooperation between the two brotherly countries serves as a factor of stability. He also underlined the importance of economic ties between the two countries and highlighted the role of parliaments in further deepening relations in this field.
The sides also discussed the important joint projects implemented by Azerbaijan and Turkiye.
The discussions addressed the current situation in the region following last August’s Washington Summit, the new opportunities for cooperation that will arise after the launch of the Zangezur Corridor, as well as other issues of mutual interest.
