After Friedrich Merz was elected Chancellor of Germany, significant changes occurred in German politics regarding Ukraine's NATO membership prospects.
Axar.az reports that Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, stated this.
He noted that Germany’s attitude toward Ukraine joining NATO has changed:
“For example, for the first time, a thesis supporting Ukraine’s NATO membership was voiced by the Germans during a Ukraine-NATO Council meeting. Their statements now go slightly beyond the Alliance’s official declarations. Also, I’m currently holding talks with colleagues in the Ministry of Defense and the defense industry on how the tactical and strategic lessons of the Ukrainian Armed Forces can be used by the German Bundeswehr and NATO. Our goal here is deeper integration with them,” the ambassador emphasized.
He added that the current atmosphere allows for discussions of much deeper processes than before:
“Merz personally now supports Ukraine’s NATO membership.”
