UK eyes rapid ban on social media for under 16s

The U.K. government is planning to introduce a rapid, Australian-style ban on social media for children under 16 and close safety loopholes around AI chatbots, NBC reported.

Axar.az reports that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration is consulting on these measures and aims to implement changes within months.

The move comes amid concerns about AI chatbots, like Elon Musk’s Grok, producing unsafe content and children forming one-on-one relationships with AI.

The government also plans to introduce further child-protection measures, including automatic data preservation when a child dies, restricting “stranger pairing” on gaming consoles, and controlling the sharing of nude images. These changes will be added as amendments to existing crime and child-protection laws. While the proposals enjoy support from many parents, some experts worry they could push harmful activity to less regulated spaces or create a strict cutoff at age 16.

Other European countries, including Spain, Greece, and Slovenia, are considering similar social media bans following Australia’s lead.
