Azerbaijanis celebrate first Tuesday of Novruz holiday

Azerbaijanis celebrate Water Tuesday (Su Chershenbesi) – the first Tuesday of Novruz holiday today.

It is one of the four Tuesdays, each of which is dedicated to the awakening of one of the natural elements called Su Chershenbesi (Water Tuesday), Od Chershenbesi (Fire Tuesday) Hava Chershenbesi (Wind Tuesday) and Torpaq Chershenbesi (Earth or Last Tuesday).

First Tuesday of Novruz is related with the worship to water. People do house cleaning, spade tree and flower bottoms in gardens.

Each of Chershenbe has its own khoncha. There must be pure drinking water in the khoncha of Water Tuesday, as well as dried fruits, colorful candles, kishmish, govurga with hemp, sesame and nuts around the water.

According to beliefs, water and water sources are renewed on First Tuesday. People carry out renovation work, hold various festivities with water on this day. In general, water, which is a symbol of purity, cleanliness, has always been considered sacred. It is important to put clean water on the table on the first Tuesday, and everyone must drink it.

Su Chershenbesi is also called “Ezel Chershenbe” or “Sular Novruzu”.

Azerbaijan will celebrate Fire Tuesday on March 6, Wind Tuesday on March 13, and the last one – Earth or Last Tuesday on March 20.

Spring will come to Azerbaijan on March 20 at 8:15pm Baku time.
