In this case, Mirzoyan should resign - Bryza

The unethical gesture of Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who left the hall during the speech of his colleague Jeyhun Bayramov at the UN Security Council meeting, is not unprecedented in history. I would explain Mirzoyan's move as a desire to avoid the humiliation and emotional distress of listening to the foreign minister of a country that suffered a crushing military and political defeat. Of course, if this gesture was a protest against the peaceful future that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for the ethnic Armenian community of Karabakh to accept, then Mirzoyan should resign.

Axar.az reports that international expert, member of the Board of Directors of the Jamestown Foundation, and former US ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza expressed this opinion in his statement to Azertaj.

"In fact, Mirzoyan has always repeated Pashinyan's conciliatory rhetoric and even preceded it. For example, he openly announced the possibility of Armenia recognizing Azerbaijan's territorial integrity long before the Armenian leader did it," said Matthew Bryza.

Speaking from a regional perspective, the expert expressed cautious optimism after the restoration of sovereignty over the entire territory of Azerbaijan and the eradication of separatism.

"If the Armenian side fully implements the ceasefire agreement reached on Wednesday, I am optimistic about the future of the South Caucasus, at least in relation to Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is clear that both President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are trying to reach a peace agreement. Their main obstacles were the extremist political forces from Armenia and Karabakh, which held the rest of the ethnic Armenian community of the Karabakh region as political hostages. As long as the Armenian armed groups were in Karabakh, Pashinyan's extremist-minded political opponents could pressure him to be decisive and prepare to use military force in the future. Such an approach was, of course, a violation of the tripartite Declaration dated November 10, 2020. Now, when this serious obstacle is removed, the future of the peace agreement becomes significantly clearer," the former ambassador noted.

Mathew Bryza finally emphasized that in the current conditions, when Azerbaijan regained control over the entire territory, and the Prime Minister of Armenia called on Karabakh Armenians to prepare for peace and, as a result, reintegration into the Azerbaijani society, a new and significant impulse to conclude a peace agreement arose. The former US ambassador to Azerbaijan believes that, despite this, Pashinyan will continue to face strong opposition to the peace process from extremist political forces in Armenia who favor conflict over peace.
