Azerbaijan presents COP29 initiatives at UNESCO

On October 8, 2024, a presentation on cultural activities to be implemented within the framework of COP29 was held at the UNESCO headquarters by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Axar.az reports that the event was attended by over 300 participants, including permanent delegations from more than 100 countries to UNESCO. It began with opening speeches by Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture, and Antonio Abreu, Director of the Ecology and Earth Sciences Sector and Secretary of the Man and the Biosphere Programme.

During the presentation, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Farid Jafarov, delivered an opening speech discussing Azerbaijan-UNESCO relations, the role of culture in climate action, and the importance of including this topic in the global agenda. Jafarov also provided information about the 2nd High-Level Ministerial Dialogue, organized jointly by the Ministry of Culture of the UAE and Brazil, which will take place on November 15 as part of COP29 under the auspices of the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action (GFCBCA).

The event, moderated by Ernesto Ottone, featured a video presentation on the "Culture for Climate" (C4C) initiative put forward by the Ministry of Culture. During the presentation, detailed information was provided about the essential role of cultural behavior in climate change-related activities and a one-year action plan for upcoming projects in this direction.

Subsequently, the permanent representatives of the UAE and Brazil to UNESCO, acting as co-chairs of the GFCBCA, expressed their gratitude to Azerbaijan for its active efforts in including culture in the climate change agenda and announced their support for the C4C initiative. They also invited participants to come to Baku in November.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session and a closing speech by the Deputy Minister.
