The European Championship held in Tirana, the capital of Albania, has concluded.
Axar.az informs that, following the Greco-Roman wrestling team, Azerbaijan’s freestyle wrestling team has also conquered the top of Europe. Winning 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals, the team collected 152 points to become European champions for the sixth time. Azerbaijan finished 58 points ahead of second-place Georgia, while Armenia came third with 73 points.
Previously, Azerbaijan had been the strongest country on the continent in this discipline in 2009, 2017, 2022, 2023, and 2025.
In terms of medal quality, the team achieved its best result in the past 17 years in Albania. The tally of 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze marks Azerbaijan’s best performance in freestyle wrestling at the European Championships since 2009.
It should be noted that in Tirana, Islam Bazarganov (57 kg), Ali Tsokayev (92 kg), and Giorgi Meshvildishvili (125 kg) became European champions. Turan Bayramov (74 kg) and Arseni Cioyev (86 kg) won silver medals, while Jabrayil Hajiyev (79 kg) claimed bronze.
Thus, as in 2022 and 2025, Azerbaijan secured a golden double by becoming European champions in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling team standings.
