new league format unveiled in UEFA Europa League draw

Today, the draw for the UEFA Europa League group stage was held.

Axar.az reports that the draw ceremony took place in Monaco, starting at 15:00 Baku time.

The draw also determined the opponents for the Azerbaijani team "Qarabağ." The club from Aghdam was placed in three of the four pots. It received two opponents from each pot.

"Qarabağ's" opponents:

- From the 1st pot: "Tottenham," England (away), "Ajax," Netherlands (home)
- From the 2nd pot: "Olympiacos," Greece (away), "Lyon," France (home)
- From the 3rd pot: "Malmö," Sweden (home), "Bodo Glimt," Norway (away)
- From the 4th pot: "FCSB," Romania (home), "Elfsborg," Sweden (away)

The match schedule will be announced on August 31.

It should be noted that starting from the 2024/25 season, a league format will be applied for the first time in the competition, with 36 teams participating. A hybrid draw method was used for the first time in history for the new format. Accordingly, the clubs were drawn by hand, then computer control took over to select 8 opponents for each team. This method was chosen to shorten the draw duration.

Each of the 36 teams has two opponents from each pot. Under the new format, each team will play 8 matches against 8 different opponents, with 4 games at home and 4 away.

In the end, the top 8 teams with the most points among the 36 will advance to the round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff to reach the round of 16. Teams ranked 25th to 36th will be eliminated from European competitions.
